Internationalization is an important element in Faculty 07, both in terms of students and lecturers. The institutes are internationally networked per se – from the ifeas with African Studies and the IAW with archaeological cooperations to the History Seminar and the IKM with the Mainz-Dijon degree programs. The faculty also offers its own internationalization programme.

In spring 2026, the faculty also launched the Global Encounters – International Cultural and Historical Practices program, which is scheduled to run for three years. Under the leadership of the Dean of Studies and coordinated by the Managing Director, it will include joint course formats, peer-to-peer exchanges and a study certificate. It builds on the internationalization initiatives of the institutes and supplements these with interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives. You can find out more here.

The faculty’s institutes offer comprehensive information on studying abroad, including funding opportunities, partner institutions and subject-specific instructions. Please visit the respective pages:

The Department of History at JGU has strong international connections. Depending on our research interests and areas of focus, we maintain contacts with numerous research institutions abroad and currently collaborate with universities in 18 European countries in teaching and instruction. On the pages of the seminar you will find information on the various opportunities for stays abroad during your program of study as well as explanations of the corresponding funding and scholarship programs. Further information.

Although stays abroad are not compulsory during the program of study, they are strongly recommended. They offer the opportunity to get to know the modern cultures of the subject disciplines, to discover the European and international scientific landscape and to deepen foreign language skills. Whether it is a study visit, an internship or a language course, planning a stay abroad requires a lot of preparation and should therefore be approached at least a year in advance. Further information

As part of their program of study, students in the subject of Art History have the opportunity to study at one of our partner universities for up to 12 months through various programs (Erasmus+ | PROMOS). In addition to the acquisition of subject-specific qualifications and the expansion of foreign language skills, a stay abroad also represents a personal enrichment. Further information

Studying abroad is always an enriching experience: it offers new perspectives on your own program of study, international acquaintances, friendships and networking, and the exciting experience of mastering everyday life in another country. The European Union’s ERASMUS program supports study visits of at least 2 to 12 months at European partner universities with partial scholarships. The application process is straightforward and credits earned abroad are recognized for the program of study in Mainz. Further information
