The Faculty of History and Cultural Studies announces its initiative „Global Encounters – International Cultural and Historical Practices“. Bringing together resources from the four institutes, we develop an offer for international classes as well as a new study certificate over the coming three years. Our aim is to broaden the curriculum and include international perspectives even more into our teaching.
Our institutes in the fields of cultural and historical studies are intrinsically dedicated to continuous and intensified international relations. To welcome students from abroad and facilitate international exchanges four our students is at the heart of our institutes and staff. We already have established manifold programmes and collaborations: From Erasmus+ via the Mainz-Dijon studies to various international research-project and teaching exchange. The new initiative will widen this network and provide a new structure for successful student exchanges.
The programme Global Encounters – International Cultural and Historic Practices will start by developing the COIL (Collaborative online International Learning) course „Cultural Heritage in a Global Perspective“. The students will learn about the migration and history of objects, images and music as well as cultural memories from a global perspective. This includes intensive work with digital sources. The students will work in small international teams and and learn to discuss in different languages the scholarly challenges and opportunities in a global world.
Further steps will to develop digital tools to provide our international guests all information to start at our faculty and to enable individual connections with peers. The goal is to establish a study certificate „Global Humanities@FB07“ that will enhance the curricula of home and abroad students with international academic skills and a broadened perspective. Overall, this initiative is planned to be fully integrated within three years (2026–2029), providing our future students even more international opportunities.
The project is generously supported by the international office of JGU under the aegis of the Vice-president for Teaching and Learning, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Stephan Jolie.
The Dean of Study and Teaching at Faculty 07, Prof. Dr. Stefanie Acquavella-Rauch, heads this joint initiative. The faculty manager, Dr. Steffen Haug, is responsible for the organisation. Please find regular updates on this website.
