You will receive your certificates and all related documents here. Study and examination achievements - apart from the final written and oral examinations - are managed by the study offices of the individual institutes and departments. Bachelor/Master of Education students should contact the University Examination Office for Teacher Education(HPL).

Requirements for registering for the Bachelor's thesis

Students generally register for the Bachelor's thesis at the beginning of the sixth semester, provided they have at least 120 credit points, of which at least 80 credit points are in the core subject .

The first registration for the Bachelor's thesis must take place at the latest after completion of the sixth year of study (12th semester), otherwise the Bachelor's thesis will be deemed to have been failed for the first time and you will be asked to attend a student advisory session.

Who certifies my credit points?

The examination managers in the study office (responsible for module examinations) from your respective institute or seminar will certify your credit points.

Registration of the thesis

You think about a topic for your thesis and contact potential supervisors. Once the topic has been agreed, you fill out the application form and have it signed by the examiner.

You must submit the completed application to the Central Examination Office within a maximum of three working days.

After registration, you will receive a written admission letter by post stating your topic and the submission date.

You can find out who may be the supervisor of a thesis for the Bachelor's degree program in Section 8 (2) of the respective examination regulations. As a rule, these are all professors, habilitated professors, research assistants, lecturers and teaching staff for special tasks. If in doubt, please contact the central examination office.

At least one reviewer should be a university lecturer in Faculty 07 or habilitated. Consequently, a thesis can, for example, be supervised by a research assistant as the first reviewer, while the second reviewer is a university lecturer.

I would like to hand in my Bachelor's thesis. What do I have to do?

How do I know if I have passed my Bachelor's thesis?

Sobald die beiden Gutachten vorliegen, erhalten Sie von uns eine E-Mail, in der wir Sie darüber informieren, ob Sie die Arbeit bestanden haben. How can I get my diploma as quickly as possible?

You will receive your degree certificate from the Central Examination Office. After the oral examination in the final module, the Examination Office will issue the certificate, transcript of records, diploma supplement in German and, if applicable, a provisional certificate.

Your documents can only be issued if you have completed all modules at this time and have been registered by the staff of the relevant study office. Please make sure that this is the case before asking at the Central Examination Office.

If your final oral examination is not your last examination performance, please inform us by e-mail as soon as all your modules have been completed so that we can prepare your documents. Please bear in mind that it takes some time to prepare your documents and that we have six weeks to complete your documents according to the examination regulations.

Can I get certified copies of my certificate?

You will also receive two certified copies together with your Bachelor's certificate. If you need/want more copies, the easiest way is to contact your local authority, which will certify your certificates for a fee. In Mainz, this task is carried out by the Bürgeramt (here the first three copies are free of charge).

Registration as a doctoral candidate

Doctoral candidates at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz are required to register in accordance with Section 34 of the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate - regardless of whether they wish to be enrolled as (doctoral) students or not. If you wish to pursue a doctorate at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, you can apply for registration online at jogustine.uni-mainz.de for acceptance as a doctoral candidate. You must then print out and sign the online application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate and submit it to your supervisor for signature.

Doctoral candidates with (university) certificates obtained abroad must first have these certificates recognized by the International Admissions Office. Information for doctoral candidates with foreign certificates can be found here. Please note that the recognition of foreign certificates is subject to a fee and may take some time. The application for recognition is made online via the Jogustine portal. Detailed information and instructions for completing the application can be found here.

Before acceptance as a doctoral candidate

Please have the printed application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate signed by your supervisor and submit it to the Dean's Office of Faculty 07 (Ms. Bergner) together with the documents required to check the requirements for acceptance as a doctoral candidate (university certificates, if applicable with a certificate of recognition of the same, university entrance qualification, language certificates if applicable). The admission requirements will then be checked in accordance with the doctoral degree regulations.

Unter besonderen Voraussetzungen ist auch eine Promotion im Nebenfach, in einem benachbarten Fach, mit einem Bachelor- oder Fachhochschulabschluss möglich. Nähere Informationen finden Sie im § 3 der Promotionsordnung. Wenden Sie sich bitte in diesem Fall rechtzeitig an das Dekanat.

Acceptance as a doctoral candidate

If the requirements for acceptance as a doctoral candidate are met, the Dean's Office will issue a written confirmation of acceptance as a doctoral candidate (so-called letter of acceptance). The date of the letter of acceptance is the start date of the doctorate. Registration as a doctoral candidate is completed when the letter of acceptance is issued.

Enrollment as a doctoral student (voluntary)

If you wish to enrol as a doctoral student in addition to registering, you can indicate this when submitting your application. The application will be forwarded to the Registrar's Office by the Dean's Office after written confirmation of acceptance as a doctoral student - together with any other documents required for the application for enrolment. You will receive further information from them regarding enrollment. Upon enrolment, you receive the status of a student with all the associated rights (e.g. semester ticket, right to vote in the student group) and obligations (e.g. payment of the semester fee). If you do not wish to apply for enrollment immediately upon registration, but at a later date, this is also possible with a separate application.5 Submission of the dissertation (opening of the examination procedure)

Supervision agreement

Eine Betreuungsvereinbarung ist eine verpflichtende Verabredung zwischen der Promovendin bzw. dem Promovenden und der Betreuerin bzw. dem Betreuer der Dissertation. Sie trägt dazu bei, das wechselseitige Verhältnis möglichst klar und transparent zu umreißen und die Inhalte und Ziele der Dissertation festzulegen. Der Inhalt ist frei auszugestalten. Der FB 07 empfiehlt diese Vorlage. Weiterführende Informationen bietet die Gutenberg School of the Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHS).

Admission to doctoral studies

Die aktuelle Promotionsordnung ist seit dem 28.08.2023 in Kraft. Sie unterscheidet sich von der Ordnung 2021 nur durch das neu aufgenommene Fach "Islamische Geschichte". Prüfungskolloquium

Für die Anmeldung zum Prüfungskolloquium (Disputation) nutzen Sie bitte das Formularblatt aus der Zulassung zur Promotion (siehe oben). Sie finden es alternativ einzeln auch hier.

What are the formal requirements for the dissertation?

The examination regulations do not specify how the dissertation should look. You are completely free to choose the form. However, it is advisable to discuss font size, line spacing, margins and the like with your supervisor. No ring binding please!

Do I have to be enrolled at the time of the oral examination?

No, you do not have to be enrolled at any time during the doctoral procedure. However, registration is mandatory.

Who appoints the second assessor and the members of the review committee? (old PO)

According to the examination regulations, this is done by the dean. However, it is advisable to make appropriate suggestions to the dean in consultation with the supervisor.

May I use the title "Dr. des." after the oral examination?

The examination regulations do not recognize the title "Dr.des." which is why you are not allowed to use it. You may use the title "Dr. phil." after publication. Please refer to § 22 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations (2000) and § 24 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations (2016).

I would like to do a doctorate, but I have a Master's/Magister's degree in another subject. Is that possible?

Under certain conditions, a doctorate in a minor subject or a related subject is possible. Please compare the regulations in § 3 of the doctoral degree regulations and seek advice from the Examinations Office.

Examination registrations can be submitted digitally. Please submit documents and theses via the mailbox or the parcel box in Philosophicum II (1st floor, to the right of the stairs, in front of the glass door) or in person, during the respective office hours of the individual staff members or by post.

The coronavirus-related changes applicable from 2020 to 2022 have ceased to apply.

Important: Please submit certificates for module examinations / assignments directly to the study office of the respective institute / seminar.
